When the sound of drums or firecrackers fills the air, villagers make their way to the Thuy Dinh manipulation pavilion. People of all ages - children, adults, and the elderly alike - gather eagerly in front of the stage to witness the mesmerising spectacle of water puppetry. A tradition that has captivated the Vietnamese for over a thousand years, it continues to inspire awe today.

Vietnamese Water Puppetry Tradition

History of Vietnamese Water Puppetry

Water puppetry has its origins in northern Vietnam, particularly in the Red River Delta, where it was first performed by farmers. Over time, it became an integral part of village festivals, ceremonies, and New Year celebrations. Passed down through generations, it has grown into an esteemed tradition, now recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of Vietnam.

How Water Puppetry Works

The puppets, known as "con tro," are made from light, soft fig wood. Each puppet is intricately carved, painted, and decorated to bring the character's personality to life.

Water puppetry is an enchanting art form that combines two elements - puppets and water. Puppeteers, hidden from view, skilfully manipulate the puppets with poles and strings, creating the illusion that they glide effortlessly across the water. A performance typically involves 11 puppeteers working together to create a seamless experience.

What Makes Water Puppetry Special

Water puppetry is more than just an art form - it's an engaging and entertaining spectacle. The puppets bring to life stories of everyday life, animals, and even mythical creatures. Through these performances, audiences are introduced to important cultural values, including morality, patriotism, and the timeless heritage of Vietnam.

When you attend a performance, you'll be captivated by the beautifully carved puppets as they tell their stories, accompanied by the rhythms of traditional music. Percussion, flutes, cymbals, and the haunting melodies of the monochord (Dan Bau) all set the tone, creating a magical atmosphere.
